The Secret to an Even Burn: Expert Tips for Your Scented Candles

How to Get a Candle to Burn Evenly: A Must-Read for Wax Lovers

If you're reading this, you probably fall into one or more of the following categories: you're a candle lover, an advocate for eco-conscious, cruelty-free products, or someone who adores the aroma of a burning candle as part of a daily self-care routine. If so, welcome to Scents of Purpose, your new favorite online destination for premium, hand-poured candles. Today, we'll tackle a common question many candle enthusiasts ask: how do you get a candle to burn evenly?

We understand the frustration of purchasing a beautiful candle only to watch it burn unevenly, wasting wax and your hard-earned money. Uneven burning, also known as tunnelling, often happens when only the wax near the wick melts while leaving a wall of unmelted wax around the candle jar. It not only shortens the lifespan of your candle but can also impact the scent throw.

Don't despair! There are ways to prevent your candles from tunnelling and to achieve an even burn for a much more enjoyable and extended burning experience. Let's explore them together!

Trim Your Wick for an Even Burn

Did you know that the length of your wick plays a significant role in how evenly your candle burns? When the wick is too long, it creates a large flame which can produce excess heat. This causes the wax to melt unevenly, leading to the dreaded tunnelling effect.

That's why our first advice is to trim your wick before every burn. Aim for about 1/4 inch long – this is usually the perfect length to promote an even wax melt and prevent the wick from mushrooming.

If you don't have a wick trimmer on hand, nail clippers will work in a pinch. But for the best results, we recommend using specially designed wick trimmers – they are made to reach into jars and cut wicks at the perfect angle.

The First Burn is Crucial

Ever heard of a "memory ring?" No, it's not a piece of jewellery. It's a term used in the world of candles! When you light a new candle, the wax will melt in a pool that extends from the wick outwards. This melted wax "pool" determines how far out the wax will melt in future burns.

The most important time to prevent tunnelling is during the initial burn. Our hand-poured candles, such as our popular R&R and Scent You a Smile candles, are designed to achieve a full melt pool (where the melted wax reaches the edge of the jar) within 2-4 hours of burning. This creates a "memory ring" that the candle will follow in subsequent burns.

Keep it Lit

For an even burn, let the melt pool reach the edge of the candle jar before you snuff out the flame. This typically takes around 2-4 hours, depending on the size and type of the candle.

If you extinguish the candle before this, it may create a "tunnel" down the middle of the candle on subsequent burns. Therefore, we suggest setting aside enough time to let your candle burn fully across the top layer before you blow it out.

Our You're Scent-sational Grey candle is designed to deliver a longer burn time, ensuring that you can enjoy your moment of relaxation while also ensuring an even burn.

Avoid Draughts

Draughts can cause the flame to flicker, which leads to uneven heat and, subsequently, uneven melting of the wax. Therefore, place your candle in a draught-free area where it can burn evenly.

Rotate Your Candle

If you notice your candle starting to tunnel despite following all these tips, try rotating your candle 90 degrees every hour or so. This can help to even out any inconsistencies in the burn.
